Growth & Puberty

When should a child be referred for poor growth?

The following should make you consider a referral for further assessment:

  • When a child is short for parents' heights
  • When height velocity is below expected for age
  • If the height has crossed > 2 centile lines (up or down)
  • Height > 3 SDs below mean (ie less than the 0.4th centile)
  • Child is at risk of having poor growth

         - Known to have a condition associated with growth failure

          - Known to have had treatment that may lead to poor growth as a side effect
