Puberty - Boys

This image shows Tanner Staging of puberty, although it is appropriate to simply describe changes seen. The key changes are the increase in testicular volume (assessed with an Orchidometer) shown on the right, the lengthening of the penile shaft with darkening of the scrotum and an increase in the amount of pubic hair.

Stage 1 is prepubertal and 5 is post-pubertal.

  • Usually begins with an increase in testicular volume (increase in size to > 3ml)
  • Is testosterone dependent
  • There is typically a delay of approximately 2 years from the onset (increase in testicular volume) to the maximum growth spurt
  • Growth Spurt typically occurs at the end of puberty (avr age 14 years)
  • From start to finish usually lasts approximately 3.2 years (+/- 1.8 years)
