Aims and Outcomes

This workbook is designed to provide you with an overview of Diabetes in children. It is made up of a combination of slides, open questions, MCQs and Case Presentations to help you develop your understanding of the disease and its treatment.


By the end of the workbook you should:

  • Be able to explain what Diabetes is, including:

               - Who gets it?

               - What is Type 1 Diabetes?

               - What is Type 2 Diabetes?

  • Be able to discuss the different management strategies applied in diabetes
  • Understand the presenting features and treatment principles of Hypoglycaemia in Insulin-treated patients
  • Understand the presenting features and treatment principles of Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)
  • Recognise that Cerebral Oedema is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication of DKA that can be compounded by poor medical management
