Paediatric Diabetes Workbook

Wrap-up

Summary

  • Diabetes is very common and very expensive (to the patient and to the NHS)
  • Biochemical diagnosis which is EASY to make (as long as you think of the diagnosis)
  • Just over 95% people <18y of age who have diabetes have type 1 diabetes and their need for insulin is URGENT (if you think they may have diabetes confirm the diagnosis the same day)

  • All patients with type 1 diabetes need active insulin in their body at all times to prevent Hyperglycaemia and risk of DKA
  • Patients on insulin who have blood glucose <4mmol/L need treatment for their low sugar immediately
  • Treating DKA is easy - just follow International Paediatric DKA guidelines
  • Cerebral oedema is treatable as long as it is identified early
