Case 2

On-going Treatment

Jessica is in Diabetic Ketoacidosis - her blood sugar is elevated, she is ketotic and her pH is < 7.35.

She is mildly tachycardic, has Kussmaul's breathing (a deep sighing pattern of breathing where the body is expelling CO2 to attempt to correct a metabolic acidosis) and has a dry mouth; her dehydration is estimated at 5%.

As per the guidelines she is to be started on Intravenous fluids one hour before intravenous insulin is begun.

Multiple Choice Question

Jessica weighs 62kg, calculate the rate at which her IV fluids should run. She has not received a fluid bolus.

Multiple Choice Question

What fluid should she receive?
