  • Total score is out of 10
  • The letters A P G A R can be used as an acronym to aid memory (as shown above) but the assessment is named for its creator; with each section scored from 0-2
  • Scores are given at 1 min, 5 mins (and 10 minutes if there is on-going resuscitation)

George was born at term in 'poor condition' - he gasped at 30 seconds but was pale, floppy and bradycardic (<100bpm). In response to resuscitation his heart rate rose above 100bpm by 50 seconds and he gave a good cry at 2 minutes and continued had a forceful cry thereafter. His colour gradually improved over the first 10 minutes of life and his body was felt to be pink from 3 minutes with pink peripheries from 7 minutes. His tone improved from 3 minutes with crying and he was vigorous by 8 minutes of age.
