Neonatal Jaundice

Prolonged Jaundice

  • Prolonged Jaundice is jaundice continuing after 14 days (21 days in a preterm infant)
  • Most commonly due to 'Breast Milk Jaundice' – an unconjugated hyperbilirubinaemia caused by increased reabsorption of intestinal bilirubin via the enterohepatic circulation
  • Infants with Prolonged Jaundice should have their Total Bilirubin checked including the conjugated fraction
  • An elevated conjugated fraction suggests Biliary Atresia requiring urgent assessment
