- Prolonged Jaundice is jaundice continuing after 14 days (21 days in a preterm infant)
- Most commonly due to 'Breast Milk Jaundice' – an unconjugated hyperbilirubinaemia caused by increased reabsorption of intestinal bilirubin via the enterohepatic circulation
- Infants with Prolonged Jaundice should have their Total Bilirubin checked including the conjugated fraction
- An elevated conjugated fraction suggests Biliary Atresia requiring urgent assessment
