Neonatal Medicine

What goes wrong?

What goes wrong?

In England and Wales approximately 690,000 babies are born each year. 7% are born before 37 weeks (just under 50,000) and of those, 93% are born after 28 weeks.

Around 10% of all babies born required neonatal care of some description and this may last from hours to months depending on the severity of the problem.

Admission to a Neonatal Unit can be very distressing for parents and every effort is made to look after infants at their parents' bedside or even at home.

Open Question

Imagine you are trying to create a policy document for your neonatal unit. Which babies need admission and why? Does every baby born early need to be admitted and what factors might affect your decision making?
