Child Health 2 - Oli

Chapter 1

Urine Collection

You discuss the pros and cons of the urine collection methods with the registrar. She explains that pad samples are used frequently on the ward in well infants but the samples are frequently contaminated and they need to get a clean catch to confirm the results. She explains that getting a clean catch specimen can be frustrating as infants tend to wee the minute you turn your back. In this case, she feels the sample needs to be taken before starting antibiotics and she doesn’t want to delay the antibiotics whilst waiting for a clean catch. She agrees that a quick “in-out” catheter would be best.

Teacher's Comment

It is important to work within your competencies in medicine. This registrar knows that Supra-pubic sampling should be performed under ultrasound guidance and, as she has not done this before, is not prepared to just "have a go".
