This case begins with you encountering a child in an acute setting, this could be an Emergency Department or Assessment unit, but this child could just as easily present with the same problem in General Practice.
You will be asked some multiple choice questions and also to record your own thoughts for a number of open ended questions, some of which are answered in the text and others are not. You will get the most out of the case when you take the time to consider what you would actually do in that situation, look up information that you do not know and reflect on cases that you have seen before. For many questions there is not a ‘right’ answer and clinicians and parents will differ in how they will approach certain things.
Virtual cases are not designed to replace clinical exposure but to support it and it is hoped that you will be able to apply what you learn here in actual practice. You may find it helpful to discuss this case with colleagues, the medical team or your tutor.
