Freya will need to commence chemotherapy quickly. Tumour lysis syndrome is a potentially life threatening complication of cancer, especially in the early stages of chemotherapy treatment.

Haematological malignancies with a high proliferation rate and even bulky solid tumours are at an increased risk due to high cell turnover and therefore release of their intracellular contents.  This can occur even pre chemotherapy, although there is an increased risk in the days immediately following chemotherapy.
