Treatment

Proliferative diabetic retinopathy can be treated. The treatment is laser whilst also optimising control of the blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol and avoiding smoking.


Pan-Retinal Laser Photocoagulation (PRP) is applied to the peripheral retina to cause the new vessels to regress. The white spots in the nasal retina are the laser burns.


If caught early, sight can be still be saved!

Reflect on the importance of diabetes control in the prevention of retinopathy and the systemic

factors that the GP should aim to monitor and keep stable in order to avoid progression in diabetic eye disease.
